Name of Island
I would go a step further and attempt to agree upon a name for the island. Both names clearly have their flaws, so a new name should be drawn out to appease both parties, as well as the Shartak community as a whole. I'm not sure what the best way to do this would be: possibly a week or so of suggestions, and then another week of polls? I think the end goal would be to a have a name recognized by all clans of Shartak. On a side note, I thought it was an RE member who made the suggestion that an island existed based on the map of Shartak / Hispanola? --Gandhi 02:57, 5 May 2006 (BST)
I really like the neutrality presented in this article. No one can really disagree that these islands aren't located on the west and that there are three of them. I also like having the freedom for creating new names. But I won't object for a note in the article to state which is the most commonly agreed upon name. --Lint 03:31, 5 May 2006 (BST)
- Edit: I suppose it helps to spell the island properly. --Lint 22:20, 5 May 2006 (BST)
Re: Shartak / Hispaniola.
- MetaMap project (???) - By the way, anyone else think the island of Shartak looks like Hispaniola?
- Kurtz (March 18, 2006) - Just as a heads up, the outline map of the island is in the game logo (and it is based on a map of Hispaniola - Haiti and the Dominican Republic), so if you can find a coastline you can probably work out roughly where you are.
- Sir Charles Highgate (April 7, 2006) - It was just a picture off the internet of the island Shartak is based on.
explanation / invitation
This is an attempt at a NPOV article that can be linked to from the rest of the wiki. I have included links to both La Islet Bonobo and Shark Island rather than trying to summate both. I would hope that this will let both parties continue to play out the classic colonial conflict of discovery and naming.
Both groups are named once in full, and once by abbreviation. There is a single link/reference to each page. I have tried to balance references to the area-in-question as both islet and island.
I welcome comments, additions and criticism from any interested parties and acknowlege my subjectivity as both a member of the Royal Expedition and 'involved party'.
My 'agenda' is to try and continue this conflict (I am having more fun than at any other point in this game) and to make it fun for both parties. I would rather not have a convincing 'victory' for either side and hope to be able to maintain a balance of power. Limiting the scope of our conflict to the island itself is an in-game mechanism, providing a neutral wiki entry so that both very non-neutral pages can be maintained may be another. However, I recognise that the wiki may not be a suitable place for this sort of conflict, and that even with both parties behaving themselves it could easily spill over to the sort of 'wiki-wars' that other sites have seen. I submit this entry, then, both for criticism of content, and also of intent. Anothertwilight 03:14, 5 May 2006 (BST) aka Morgan Freelance
A proposal for community-determined islet names
I recommend that we designate this talk page to be used by all members of the wiki to submit naming proposals for the five islets on the map as well as comments on said proposals. (One of the other islets is just south of York, and the other is just south of Derby.) The Royal Expedition and the Discordian Cargo Cult will be notified on their talk pages; other groups and individuals can be notified as each of us sees fit. At a certain time (00:00, June 1, 2006 (UTC) is what I have in mind), proposals will be frozen and voting will open for all users. Eligible voters (anyone who linked to their character's profile in their User page before this post was submitted, or whose character profile links to their User page) will vote according to the Condorcet method. After a week votes will be counted (with the Borda count breaking all ties) and the winning proposal will become the community standard.
This sounds excessively formal, but I don't think it will be in practice, and I think it's the best way for the community to name the islets. Thoughts? — Elembis 20:51, 21 May 2006 (BST)
- Why not just accept any wiki signature that holds several contributory edits? Imho, welcoming new people to participate in Shartak (and the wiki) is much more important than trying to prosecute potential vandals who are so lame that they stuff the voting of an unofficial wiki for a free web game by making throwaway characters and wiki accounts. When push comes to shove, all this stuff is archived forever and Simon has e-mail addresses -- so if vandalism and cheating becomes a problem, it can be tracked down after-the-fact rather than assuming guilt. --Tycho44 21:53, 21 May 2006 (BST)
- You're right, this isn't an election for ruler of the world or anything. Anyone with multiple edits will be allowed to vote. — Elembis 22:05, 21 May 2006 (BST)
- Have you considered asking the Meta Map project and/or the UBER Map project for both the dates and submitter who first added the islets to their respective projects? If you are going to notify the RE and DCC to invite proposals for the naming of the largest islet, it would be worthwhile asking said 'discoverers' for their preference with respect the other islets. The same should probably occur with regards the 4 lakes, river and possibly move on to various bays and harbours. Anothertwilight 02:07, 23 May 2006 (BST)

I like having the freedom for players to call landmarks what they want. It sort of allows the names to shift as events unfold and clans grow or fade in power. But I do realize how much easier it is to refer to a location by name rather than an ambiguous "that island over there".
The first western islet appears to have been unofficially dubbed ingame as Rodrigo Island. "A makeshift sign stuck in the ground reads Rodrigo Island - Discovered by Alex Rodrigo in the early weeks of the colonization." And the second western islet appears to have been unofficially dubbed ingame as Monkey Island. "A makeshift sign stuck in the ground reads Welcome to Monkey Island!" --Lint 01:11, 24 May 2006 (BST)
