Exploration Skills

The main purpose of these skills is too help one get across the island of Shartak quicker, survive in the jungle longer, and with the knowledge of where they have been. Two classes benefit from a greatly increased movement rate through the jungle itself, the native Scout and the outsider Explorer.

Exploration

Helps you remember some of the places you've been - Enables the "Map" button, which gives you a large-scale map of places you've visited while alive and haven't forgotten.

A dusty boot packed mountain gravel. The foot belonged to a certain Oktavius, who hoisted off his travel bag and stepped toward the the sunrise. The breeze ruffled his person gently and an orange glow gradually illuminated his face. Though nothing poetic came to mind, Oktavius smiled triumphantly as he had finally explored all of Shartak.

Cartography

Stops you forgetting anywhere you've visited - While Exploration enables the map, this skill allows one to remember more of the map. This helps with exploration of the island, so if one is trying to map the whole island, they don't need to continuously go over the same spaces. Requires Exploration to learn.

The escapee stunk of his unwashed weeks and was acutely aware of it. Rushing past leaves and nocturnal birds, the jungle ended and the misted walls of Derby towered before him. Edwin realized he had reached sanctuary, however precarious. The howls of blindly enraged cannibals approached closer. They penetrated the darkness, but toppled under their own weight as the cracks of watchful rifles picked them off. The naturalist felt a mixture of confusion and fortuity that one was clutching his backpack, but was relieved that he was no longer on the menu.

Trekking

Faster movement through the jungle - Makes movement through grassland, beach, and d1-d6 jungle terrain cost 0.5 AP instead of 1AP. Requires Exploration to learn.

The native ran and ran until calluses formed on the soles of his feet, just as the village elder told him to. He felt as if he were part of some folktale as the road to Wiksik extended far into the distance. Soon after he had become an expert in the art of self-propulsion.

Swimming

Faster movement through water - Makes movement through water cost 1 AP instead of 2AP as well as making movement through deep water costs 2 AP instead of 3AP. This skill also helps movement through swamp tiles. Requires Exploration to learn.

He hated water, but did not hate people, although his peers treated him differently. His swimming attempt was lauded with the accusation that he was like "a toddler trying to smash ants". The scrawny teenager left the military training alone, his tears hidden among undried pool water. Serious Sam was unaware this would be the first of a long line of humiliation.

Survival - Firecraft

Knowledge of how to create, control and use fires - Reduces cost of tinder making from 3AP to 1AP. See Campfire for more information on the fire mechanic. Requires Exploration to learn.

His tenure of passivity ended when he came across the scene. Sweating and gulping, he mustered the courage to carry out his sense of ethics although it conflicted with traditions, and he now found himself among the prey. He did his best to help and survive, but as soon as his arms parted the bushes, bullets parted his ribs. He muttered quietly as the shadow lifted the backpack from his trembling hand. The Derby militia built a pyre and the nameless hero's corpse was fed to the flames.
