Shartak Under Threat From Foreign Powers?

Hey, hey, hey, cool your cannons there Yorkies. I'm negotiating terms of my York raid with my fellow Derbians, the Hospitallers. I wish to remain allies with them so I believe I may have to narrow the scope of my rifle fire to just the PH and OOP. I have not appointed myself the sole-savior of the town of Derby - you make it sound like I have, but I'm just one of many Derby Patriots. Also, I believe you refered to me as a former Privateer...why former? (PS: Fan of the paper by the way) RobZombie

Anyone who missed the speech is in luck! As the speech was a major event in York, I hired someone to write it down, so I have a full transcript. Also included is the first bit of the question and answer session afterwards, though the person I hired fell asleep at the end and did not record the final exchanges, which I summarize in brackets instead of verbatim as they were said. Note that the question and answer session would have gone on much longer if not for the actions of the despicable criminal ombined. --Kjendlie 02:36, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Marco says “Good evening, everyone! It's great to see so many of you here tonight. I'm Marco, founder of the Shartak Preservation Front. We don't actually have leaders as such, but as our figurehead...” (2006-11-06 18:49)
  • Marco says “...and spokesperson, I seem to be the guy with the bounty on my head.” (2006-11-06 18:50)
  • Marco says “I'm here today because we are currently at a critical point in Shartak's development; a point where we can decide either to sit back and allow unscrupulous developers to strip this island bare and...” (2006-11-06 18:51)
  • Marco says “...leave us with nothing but a barren desert, or organise to safeguard this beautiful land for our children and our children's children.” (2006-11-06 18:51)
  • Marco says “We do not yet fully understand this unique and precious ecosystem, but already it is clear that each organism is an irreplacable part of an interdependent whole.” (2006-11-06 18:52)
  • Marco says “What seemed at first to be a lush, fertile land has turned out to be naturally barren and sparse. The plentiful nutrients that feed our vast jungle come not from the land,” (2006-11-06 18:53)
  • Marco says “but from the plants themselves.” (2006-11-06 18:53)
  • Marco says “Decomposing plants and leaves form a rich, nutritious topsoil upon which our trees and grasses thrive. Remove the natural plant growth, however, as when land is cleared for farming,” (2006-11-06 18:54)
  • Marco says “and this topsoil is quickly exhausted. The land becomes dead, and may take decades to fully recover. this is why large-scaled farming has failed even in the lushest jungle.” (2006-11-06 18:57)
  • Marco says “So far, this effect has thankfully been limited. But if we do not act to keep it limited, then this soil degredation will spread to consume the very heart of our land.” (2006-11-06 18:58)
  • Marco says “No trees - no animals - no crops - is this the Shartak you want to live on?” (2006-11-06 18:58)
  • Marco says “Fortunately, there are grassroots organisations resisting this short-sighted destruction. After a long, hard-fought battle, me and my comrades in the SPF have managed to shut down the York-Derby road” (2006-11-06 19:00)
  • Marco says “, protecting the delicate and unique microhabitats that it threatened.” (2006-11-06 19:01)
  • Marco says “Contrary to the Civilized Highways Society propaganda, this was acheived mainly through non-violent means, with violence only resorted to when the Society attacked our members,” (2006-11-06 19:02)
  • Marco says “destroyed our barricades, and hired mercenaries to kill us. Nonetheless, we endured and went on to win a great and inspiring victory.” (2006-11-06 19:02)
  • Marco says “This struggle continues, and we hope to close the Southern Coastal Boulevard, and then the disastrous Dalpok-Shipwreck road, which has brought nothing but war and strife to that troubled region.” (2006-11-06 19:03)
  • Marco says “All help in this vital task will be pivotal in determining the future of Shartak.” (2006-11-06 19:03)
  • Marco says “by bocotting the roads.” (2006-11-06 19:04)
  • Marco says “We don't expect all of you to join us out in the jungles with a rifle, of course! Those of you with other commitments can still make a difference by boycotting the roads.” (2006-11-06 19:05)
  • Marco says “Most successful traders these days use the beaches instead of the roads. As all the colonies are coastal, ” (2006-11-06 19:06)
  • Marco says “this route is just as quick and direct, and carries far less risk of bandit or headhunter attack. When heading inland, get a GPS and use natural landmarks such as rivers to navigate.” (2006-11-06 19:06)
  • Marco says “Where possible, buy local produce that hasn't been needlessly shipped across half the island, doing untold damage along the way.” (2006-11-06 19:07)
  • Thari says “I CNA HAEL PPL!!!11!” (2006-11-06 19:07)
  • Marco says “Just remember always that everything you can do helps, and that together we CAN make a difference.” (2006-11-06 19:08)
  • Marco says “As so I urge you all to join the cause, in whatever way you can, by any means nessecary or possible.” (2006-11-06 19:08)

  • Marco says “For all our futures; Organise! Agitate! Resist!” (2006-11-06 19:09)
  • Marco says “Thank you!” (2006-11-06 19:09)
  • Kjendlie says “Marco, wont navigating through the interior jungles take much longer than going over roads?” (2006-11-06 19:10)
  • Marco says “it will take longer, but this can be minimised by keeping to the coast where possible and avoiding particularly dense jungle. At the end of the day, i'm personally prepared to...” (2006-11-06 19:15)

  • Kjendlie says “Is that detrimental as well” (2006-11-06 19:33)
  • Kjendlie says “Also, why not plant fresh seeds in places cut down, or transplant existing plants, instead of killing the highwaymen?” (2006-11-06 19:41)
  • Marco says “Travel by ship does little eco damage itself. However, shipbuilding can be enormously detructive if not carefully managed.” (2006-11-06 19:51)
  • Marco says “Replanting, although useful, has limited effects, due to the degredation on soil after the initial deforestation. In the same way that farmland in deforested areas quickly fails, the natural flora” (2006-11-06 19:52)
  • Marco says “are slow to recolonise lost ground.” (2006-11-06 19:52)
  • Marco says “If we fail to stop the problem at the cause, it is nigh-on impossible to merely repair the damage done, especially if the damage continues.” (2006-11-06 19:53)
  • [Zydd Soral says something about the possibility of creating road networks of low-density jungle instead of clearcutting wide roads.]
  • [Marco answers by saying something about that might be a good idea and should be looked into]
  • [ombined bursts into the hut, shoots Marco and lacuna, flees. Is pursued by Kjendlie who catches up with him a ways north in the jungle and deals some damage, but the murderer manages to slip away.]
