Southern Islands

The southern islands are four minor land masses to the south and south east of the main island. One lies south of the York Peninsula, another just offshore of Derby, and one is almost midway between them but lying a considerable distant off shore, only reachable through shark-infested waters. The fourth and the smallest of the islands lies south east of Derby, and is completely surrounded by deep water.

York Peninsula Island (Calvin's Eye-Land)

The western most of the southern islands is just off the York Peninsula, a half day's travel (or less) south of York.

Centered on GPS coordinate [-70.401,+26.270], this 56 square island is not much to look at. Of those 56 squares is 17 squares of jungle, with the remaining 39 squares as beach (with no boatyards among them). After much time spent on the island, intrepid explorer Calvin the Cat found a single large stag. Dubbed by the aforementioned explorer as "Calvin's Eye-Land," this quaint area is the perfect place to get away from murderous [insert rival race here] and enjoy a nice pina colada.

Update: Two tigers were seen on the island, but have since been disposed of. It seems the big cats aren't afraid of water as the stereotype says they are!

Derby Island

The eastern most island is just off shore from Derby, and easily accessible by the settlers of Derby or visitors to Derby.

Wildlife can occasionally be found on the Island, presumably having swum out from the mainland.

Arivo Rock

Arivo Rock is a small, rocky islet in the deep water south east of Derby. It has a land area of 3 beach squares and at [-70.067,+26.341] there is a dark hole that leads down to the tunnel network below Shartak. The islet was named after Raivo, who first discovered it in August of 2008.

The descriptions of the beach tiles on Arivo Rock differ from other beach tiles:

  • Beach - "A patch of sand to the edge of a large rocky mound. The odd bit of driftwood and a few stones can also be found scattered on the sand."
  • Dark hole - "A tall mound of rock sticking out of the sea with a small bit of sand around the edges. A dark cave is set into the rock, it looks man-made and strangely out of place."

Ship

On the southerns side of the island, there is a ship in the shallow water next to the beach. Areas to investigate include a wheelhouse, wherein one can find pikes and axes, and a cargo hold, where one can find whale oil and wooden planks.

The ship has the following descriptions:

  • Outside - You are standing on the deck of a whaler, called the "Sulaco". The sucker marks on the hull suggest that the ship suffered a recent attack. The water is unnaturally quiet...
  • Wheel House - This is the wheelhouse. The wheel has been lashed to the deck with strong ropes. The windows have been smashed with great force from the outside. You see boxes filled with sharp objects.
  • Cargo Hold - This is the cargo hold. Water drips on your head and the ship creaks ominously. The light is very dim but you might find useful items in storage cabinets and on the deck.

Stone Tower

Near the middle of the island is a ruined stone tower with two levels. Findable items on both levels are similar to that of a beach tile: driftwood, crabs, and empty bottles.

The tower has the following descriptions:

  • Outside - Here is a small square tower. It appears to have been abandoned long ago, and has suffered severe water damage. The sturdy stone blocks that make up the base are relatively undamaged, but the top of the tower has some gaping holes in the sides.
  • Level 1 - The interior is filled with crude furniture which has been tossed around quite a lot, probably when the tower was flooded. The rickety staircase is still useable, although from what you can see there isn't much left upstairs.
  • Level 2 - Large sections of wall are missing, and the roof is almost completely rotted away. Looking out through a gap you can see a mountain in the far distance and smoke rising from settlements to the east, north and west.

History of Midway Island

Midway Island was discovered and mapped first by the intrepid explorer Simeon Carter, who sent pigeons to the mainland settlements in hope of communicating about this new discovery.

Like Unity Island, Midway is also commonly recognised by other names - Ryleh (suggested by the Derby Privateer, Cthulhu), l'île de Mi-chemin (the French translation of Midway) and WickSick Island/Babakiueria (both suggested by the WickSick Headhunters). Other names have been suggested but have so far failed to catch on.

Midway was the site of the Battle of Midway / Rude Disturbance of Sacred Ritual on Babakiueria between the WickSick Headhunters and a number of outsider groups.

As of May 8th 2025, the second level of the tower has the following writing on the wall: "The final resting place of Neil Tathers." A body is propped up on the wall, staring out into the waters. His fingers have carved the word Peace into the stone work.
