Hiya, fellow cartographer :)
This is an invitation to check out my conversation with Simon on my user talk page -- he recommended checking out the Google Maps API for possible adaptation to Shartak mapping, and I suspect that would fit your MetaMap project better than it would my current "build colored tables in wiki code" project.
