It occurs to me that coming to this island is a bigger task than I'd originally anticipated. From surveys before we landed we know the rough size of the island.

As others have started talking about it, I might as well mention that I am currently mapping the whole of Shartak. I think that Shartak occupies a rectangle containing about 220,000 squares, although a large proportion are what I've termed "ocean" and are inaccessible. Another large chunk is deep and normal water.

After making some initial forays into the jungle, I decided to start trying to record where I was going so that I could find my way back to the base and I'd know where I'd already been. The results of this map making are quite disheartening - based on the current rate I am able to proceed, not taking into account the effort required to hack though the infernal jungle and the care needed to cross swamps, I estimate it will take around six months to explore the entire island.

I've currently mapped around 14% of the 220,000 squares on ground level, as well as some of the under and over ground levels as well. My current best guess is still that it'll take about half a year to do the complete map.

I haven't come across any interesting samples yet either, although I have no ammunition to kill them with anyway.

Mapping

As others have started talking about it, I might as well mention that I am currently mapping the whole of Shartak. I think that Shartak occupies a rectangle containing about 220,000 squares, although a large proportion are what I've termed "ocean" and are inaccessible. Another large chunk is deep and normal water.

I've currently mapped around 14% of the 220,000 squares on ground level, as well as some of the under and over ground levels as well. My current best guess is still that it'll take about half a year to do the complete map.
