== Background ==

Shartak is a lost jungle island which supports headhunting natives, stranded pirates, great white explorers and angry spirits. Mapped, analysed and divided up into neat, ordered territories it is a tropical Paradise indeed.

And yet not all of Shartak's mysteries have scientifically explained. Those who have walked the paths between this world and the next have seen ''them'' - spirits trapped in torment, unable to cross over fully to the aetherial realm - pirates who have jumped ship from the Flying Dutchman, white men who have made pacts with the dark forces of Shartak and natives who have cast off their earthly bodies.

There are strange things abroad in the jungle. Screams split the night. Survivors huddle in fear and cry of demon-possessed warriors who bring death and madness. The shaman speak of the return of trapped spirits, spirits seeking the blood and souls of the living - ''they'' are The Damned.
