=The Durham Election FAQ=

For the first time in history, the government of a Shartak town will be decided by a free and fair open election. This page aims to provide a brief overview of how you can participate in this historic event.

==Who can vote?==
The elections are open to anyone who has been a citizen of Durham longer than since the 15th of Feb, 2007.

==Where can I vote?==
To ensure transparency, the votes will be collected by a team of observers at the shaman in Durham, at [-70.648,+26.343].

==When can I vote?==
The voting will be on the 31st March 2007, from 00:00 to 24:00, server time - an in-game display of server time can be activated via the 'edit profile' page.

==Who can I vote for?==
Anyone who qualifies to vote can stand for the elections. Currently, the candidates are
* Nathan Hale, [[Durham Nationalists]]
* Commodore Jacobi, [[Durham Pistoleers]]

==So what does the winner get?==
The Durhamite with the most votes will become the Governor of Durham, and will be responsible for implementing a system of government. The various candidates have made differing promises of their intentions if they win - the most contentious areas are foreign policy, crime, and immigration.

==Will there be future elections?==
The Governor will be responsible for arranging elections for his replacement in no more than six months. If he fails to do this then the Nationalists will just force him to. We've already managed once...

The Durham Nationalists is not a clan in the traditional sense; rather, we are a way for everyone who wishes to defend [[Durham]] from aggressors to co-operate and coordinate. We believe that Durham has for too long been the plaything of foreign powers and self-appointed leaders. It is time for us to rise up and regain control over our home. Durham for the Durhamites - for the ragtail band of pioneers, frontiersmen and drifters who built this town, and can make it great again.

The Nationalists seek to establish and maintain a network of free-thinking indibiduals to promote a safe, egalitarian Durham for the benefit of all her citizens. We believe in individual freedoms and self-determination, and reject alliances with foreign groups, involvement in foreign wars, and rule by local authoritarians with equal vehemence. The people of Durham should be free to make their own choices and determine their own involvement in such matters, not be part of some faceless mass to be manipulated for the ends of some unscrupulous leader.

To this end, we will provide an information and tactical hub for every free Durhamite. We will not have banners or armies - but those who agree with our views and feel their goals are compatible with ours can come to us for information or aid in their own struggles. We will act as a network through which the people of Durham can coordinate their efforts to complement one another for the common good.

* The establishment of an accountable, elected government in Durham.
* The establishment of a people's court to judge criminals and allot punishments.

* Groups who seek to control or conquer Durham, such as the [[Durham Pistoleers]] or any of the Monarchist factions.
* Groups who seek to use Durham for military purposes - for example, the [[Jolly Roger Gang]]'s use of our town as a staging post puts us all at threat of invasion from [[York]], and the Pistoleers' co-operation with this represents a betrayal of our interests. The construction of a Dutch warship at [[Parchment Pages#Rodrigo Island|Rodrigo Island]] is also an unacceptable use of our peninsula, and we will support efforts to sabotage or otherwise prevent this project.
* Groups who threaten the safety of Durhamites, either as a whole or individually.

They say there are three stages through which any social movement must pass before it can acheive it's goals - ridicule, demonisation, and finally acceptance. The Nationalist movement may well have set a new record for the speed with which these stages can be traversed. Barely a month ago, our enemies laughed at us, said that we were 'lone madmen', even going so far as to deny our existance or our prescence in Durham. Following our heroic military campaign, which led to the removal of several dangerous individuals from Durham, we were portrayed as 'terrorists', plotting to overthrow a 'legitimate government'. And now, at this very moment, negotiations are underway to bring not only free and fair elections of our city, but also to implement the full sweep of our demands - the demands of the people of Durham!

Durhamites, victory may be within our grasp. Tell your friends, your neighbours, that their struggle has paid off. There WILL be elections in Durham. There WILL be a legitimate goverment. There WILL be representation, accountability, fairness. We must not let down our guard against those who realise the threat that freedom poses to their personal fiefdoms, and who will stop at nothing to derail the democratic process. We must stand strong, and we WILL stand strong, and when a new sun dawns over a liberated Durham all of Shartak will watch in awe, for we will be our own men at last.

==Fighting Continues in York==

Dear Editor: Your prediction, "The Imperial Privateers declare York conquered and sell it to Keiichi in return for information leading to the acquisition of a Heavy Sword. Warfare between the Guild and everybody else continues until headhunters show up and kill everyone" is not likely to be accurate for a number of reasons. First, York is not the easy pushover [[New Amsterdam]] was. Like Wiksik, it is readily defended by highly motivated and experienced fighters. It is very unlikely that we would be able to conquer and re-name the township in the same fashion as we did with New Amsterdam. Second, Keiichi is a member of the Imperials, and we already know where to find [[heavy sword]]s. Two of our number are at the location now. Third, the headhunters are en route to Derby, and are unlikely to be deterred from activities there. The Malice has briefly spoken of the forthcoming crescendo to this engagement, and we have the utmost confidence that our brethren in the Mercenaries Guild will achieve their objectives. - [[FirstAmongstDaves]]

Regardless, your use of our town as a supply camp for your troops puts us all at risk, and your membership of the group who control much of Durham does not bode well for your intentions towards our town. Hey, I've been to Durham twice and found the folks to be very pleasant towards Pirates such as my self - JRG members who trade. While I've been in and near Durham i've healed your people and they've healed me, i've helped them in fights and they've helped me. I go there to stock up on FAKs and usualy I buy something at the trader's hut on my way in/out which brings gold to the city and FAKs are infinate so what's your problem with us taking them? As far as I know, the JRG will NEVER stage an attack from Durham, we look at it with respect because its been nice to us and we'll continue to be nice to it. We TRADE with durham we bring goods from the shipwreck ( Rum, cutlass' and other trinkets) down to durham where we sell them and buy things we may need. Than we gather up FAKS and sell them to our trader up here. There has never been a JRG force larger than two in Durham. That and were coming down south tho help You guys defend againest natives. IF the CP come down we won't kill them either.

A few questions, Is this a "rebirth" of the pirate hunters or something new? Also do you think you have the guts to raid Shipwreck? That and will you attack pirate traders in Durham and Derby where they are protected under the Pistoleers ans Hospitalers?

Greetings Captain Edwards. This no rebirth of the Pirate Hunters; while I '''was''' a member of the pirate hunters and have the utmost respect for them, this is a separate group. An alliance with them is probable. This is a new group with wider aims. It is not official yet. We are gathering and getting everything sorted before our launch. To answer your questions on our objectives: Once at sufficient strength the shipwreck will be a target, (we would like to get everyone raiding each other, rather than the one way relationship, I'm sure the pirates would like the opportunity to defend for once.) As for pirates in Durham and Derby; we will aim to combat pirates in every Colonial town. We will also be combating some outsider groups and all hostile natives. Unlike the Pirate Hunters we have wider aims and our pirate hunting will be mixed with other things and be directed rather than mostly random.
