'''Charms''' is the collective term for a group of [[items]] which, when in a person's possession, appear listed on their profile in italics under their character description.

When clicked on the charm, which costs 0 [[AP]], the following description is given:

The [charm name] doesn't appear to actually ''do'' anything. Maybe just carrying it is sufficient if you believe in its power.

Because of this ambiguous description there have been many theories put forward as to what each charm does. However, few have ever been backed up by empirical evidence.

These charms will affect the wearer in subtle ways while worn. They can be found in jungles, ruins, sold at the traders, or traded between players. The Skill Faith will cause the charms to affect the wearer slightly more.

After a successful campaign as a privateer fighting against the English during the Napoleanic wars of freedom, Surcouf was sent to Shartak to maintain the interests of liberty and Empire in the New World. Surcouf landed in 1813 and immediately scouted out the great bulk of the island. After his reconoiter, Surcouf made contact with the Court of Raktam and was made Head of the Garrison at Fort Creedy, that bastion of freedom, when troops were sent to protect the liberties of the members and associates of the Commonwealth. Surcouf gallantly led the combined forces of Raktami, Creedyite and mercenary troops against the nefarious First Colonial Militia, who threatened the liberty of Creedy by attempting to restore the vile, besotten and English monarchist principle. With this victory Surcouf felt that it was safe to begin French colonization. Napolean was contacted, and an official treaty was smuggled to Shartak by a drunken Jacobin Irishman. The courrier was captured by English interests, but managed to send a copy of the treaty to Surcouf by co-opting the help of a one-legged lemur. With this alliance secured, small bands of intrepid French men and women, citizens, began to appear in small but vigorous, but not too vigorous, groups. In the summer of 1814, Hercule Le Tof, a former vinter from the county of Anjou, set up the first French encampment, a casino on the island named Il de la Chemin-Midi. People from all over Shartak flocked to the island for the classic French way of living: gambling, prostitutes, the Catholic Church, nude sun-bathing. However, as Napolean's fortunes changed and the weight of the entire planet began to shift against him, set about by the bastard English, Il de la Chemin-Midi began to grow too dangerous to support. Jealous of the liberties, pleasures and joy of the French, various forces conspired to eject the French from the island. The French fought gallantly, but soon they realized that it was not worth fighting over an island. A peninsula is a noble prize, a river perhaps, but not an island. So the French willingly and joyfully left the island shouting defiant curses as they left.

Okay more investigation today. I also found Skull Face's version and some discussion:

After experimentation, reading about templates, reading about parser functions and reading about tables ([http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Table tables at MetaWiki]), I have come to the conclusion that the problem is because of formatting, specifically lack of line feeds in certain places. This is very hard to troubleshoot since in the default wiki editor it is impossible to tell the difference between a linefeed and word wrap. Further sometimes merely editing can cause line feeds to disappear see [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Newlines_and_spaces#Stripping_on_save MetaWiki].

Using the <code>subst:</code> construct it appears that in the original template we were getting lines like

another expansion would give

When MediaWiki tries to interpret this it gives an error. It expects the table row indicator, <code>|-</code> to ''begin'' a line. No new row character then the following <code>style</code> is misplaced etc.

The simple fix is to put in some LFs:

There is at least one small problem:
If there is no <code>official_id</code> and no <code>clan_image</code> files specified then both of the
<pre>{{#ifeq: ... }}</pre> sections evaluate to a LF which puts two extra lines in the first row of the table. The solution was found in the MetaWiki [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Newlines_and_spaces#Fix help files]. Adding <pre><nowiki /></pre>tags prevents a LF from being goobled up in a parser function so things work as they should. LFs when they're needed, none when they aren't wanted.

For those of you who are new to the game, I offer this strategy: first learn ghostly whisper, then learn haunting scream. Then, whenever you are dead, all you have to do is find an enemy and scream. It gets you a guaranteed 2-3 XP when you use it around an enemy, and the XP gained increases when there are more people....
