"Writing on the tree (or sand)" was suggested by Snarf on January 27, 2006. As of February 27, 2006, it has been observed that this suggestion has been implemented.

Similar to speech, Natives/Ousiders can't understand the other's messages, and vice versa. It appears as gibberish.

Tree

You can carve a message in Jungle terrain with density ranging from 5 to 9.

  • You carve XX onto a tree.

Any character that visits that area will see the terrain description and your message.

  • Carved on a nearby tree is XX

If a carved message already exists in the area, you will not be able to carve anything.

  • You can't find any room to carve anything.

By chopping jungle to density lower than 5, you will destroy the carving.

  • The tree with the carvings is chopped down, blade marks obscuring all trace of what was there.

It requires a knife to carve into trees

Sand

You can draw a message in Beach terrain.

  • You draw XX in the sand.

If a drawn message already exists in the area, you will be able to draw over it.

  • You draw XX in the sand obliterating what was there before.

Huts

You can carve a message into squares that contain huts.

  • You carve XX onto the side of a hut.

Any players in the square will see what you have carved in the hut.

  • Carved on the side of a hut is XX

You can scratch out something that has already been carved to write your own message.

  • You scratch out what was carved there before.
