For the good of Derby!

For too long, Derby has been a backwater. Isolated from the rest of the island, Derby is a settlement without law or defense. No longer! The Knights Hospitaller are an old order, dating back to the Crusades. Now, a group has emerged on Shartak, basing their conduct on the Hospitallers' code of protection and aid.

The goals of the Derby Hospitallers

  • Behave with honor at all times.
  • Defend the innocent citizens of Derby, York, and Durham from attacks by the many threats that lurk in Shartak. Eventually, the Hospitallers hope to serve as a garrison force to defend against enemy attacks.
  • Use the Hospitallers' resources and knowledge to heal wounded outsiders. The Hospitallers intend to assemble a hospital in Derby that will provide free medical care for wounded outsiders.
  • Reduce the power of the vicious criminals who would murder their fellow settlers. The Hospitallers, in conjunction with their other duties, will attack any criminals (PKers and zergers) they come across in the course of their duties.

The Hospitaller Code of Honor

Hospitallers are encouraged to uphold the following code of conduct.

  • Hospitallers' first duty is to Derby and its inhabitants. Hospitallers should:
    • defend Derby from hostile incursions. Examples include pirate or native raids. At this time, the Hospitallers neither condemn nor endorse attacks on peaceful natives or pirates.
    • heal wounded Derbians and other wounded outsiders.
    • attack vile criminals (PKers and zergers).
  • All Hospitallers should maintain a proper sense of decorum. They should refrain from vile language and insults. (Out of character, don't flame people. If someone flames you, responding in kind just makes you and the clan look bad. As for foul language, while there won't be consequences for the occassional slip, excessive foul language is pointless; it makes you look like you aren't smart enough to express yourself in any other way. Basically, act like a mature adult.)

Laws of the Hospitallers

Unlike the code of honor, which is a set of ideals to strive towards, the laws that follow are strictly enforced. Violation may result in immediate expulsion from the Hospitallers.

  • Murder of innocent Derbians, Yorkmen, and Durhamites is strictly forbidden.
  • Practicing the dark art known as "Zerging" is absolutely and utterly forbidden under Hospitaller law.

Misc.

While the Derby Hospitallers regard the defense of Derby as their primary goal, they likewise recognize that the best defense is a good offense. Therefore, at least some Hospitallers are encouraged to scour the jungle for threats to Derby. These threats should ideally be eliminated before they can menace innocent Derbians. This also provides Hospitallers a better chance to hone their skills for the day they will inevitably be called to Derby's defense.

News

9/27/06 The clan is growing amazingly quickly. Because we won't be able to hang out by the hospital forever, I made a forum for us. This forum is intended to help the clan communicate, but I also intend to make it somewhere for Derbians in general to communicate and seek help. I intend to add a beginner's guide tailored to life in Derby at the first opportunity. The goal is to increase retention of both Hospitallers and Derbians in general.

9/23/06 The Hospitallers are officially founded! We are accepting applications.

9/15/06 Even though the Hospitallers are not yet active, the Derby Hospital has been established. To get to the hospital from the trader's hut, go one square west and two squares north. The coordinates are [-70.093,+26.352]. James Barnes

Ballad of the Hospitallers

A man of peace to Derby came,

Kind and young, James Barnes was his name.

Though strong of mind and strong of arm,

He meant no ill, he brought no harm.

He came to Shartak full of wonder,

But savage men tore him asunder.

He now understood the many threats grave.

He founded a clinic where healing he gave.

Despite his hopes, it was not enough.

Derby needs mighty men and soldiers tough.

Vowed he did, that stand he would.

Men must fight for Derby's good.

Do not be upset, the ballad is not through.

It waits for Derbians, Derbians like you.

The rest of this ballad, you must write,

As for the good of Derby, we do fight.

Blowpipes fired and cutlesses slew,

There was no law, no defence, everybody knew,

James Barnes came, his goal was for good,

But alone in his noble purpose he stood,

Then out of Derby, MajesticNinja did come,

Proud, hot-blooded, patriotic and young,

His bullets would destroy any foe,

So haters of Derby, please beware and know,

MajesticNinja is here,

And is now a Derby Hospitaller!

Fighting all of those who slay,

Was the heroine Janet Grey,

On the field a valkyrie wonder,

Will battle until she's six feet under,

To protect the innocent is her goal,

From all the villians that she know,

Can hit a man hundred metres out,

Will save the day with little doubt,

Let us all give a cheer,

For our new Hospitaller!
